Initial Myofunctional Evaluation
**Please be advised that this appointment can be anywhere from 90 - 120 minutes**
A myofunctional assessment is an exciting and comprehensive journey into your oral health! It begins with a friendly discussion about your concerns, medical history, and dental background to understand your unique situation. You’ll receive a thorough oral examination, assessing teeth alignment, tongue posture, and overall oral structure. We’ll evaluate the movement and resting position of your tongue and the strength and closure of your lips, as these are key to effective oral function. Observing your breathing patterns is crucial, as it impacts your health significantly. You’ll engage in fun exercises to assess how you chew, swallow, and speak, while we also evaluate your head, neck, and body posture since these factors influence oral function. After the assessment, we’ll share our findings and empower you with knowledge about your health, culminating in a personalized action plan that may include myofunctional therapy or referrals to specialists. It’s a fantastic opportunity to take charge of your health and embark on a path toward a healthier, more functional you!
Myofunctional Therapy Session
You’ll be given exercises to strengthen your tongue, lips, and jaw, improve nasal breathing, and correct oral posture (lips closed, tongue on the roof of your mouth). Daily practice is key, with regular follow-ups to track progress and adjust exercises. It’s a great way to improve breathing, speech, sleep, and overall facial health!
Maintenance
These check-ins allow you to fine-tune techniques, address any relapses, and make sure vital habits like proper tongue posture and nasal breathing become second nature.
Habit Elimination
Myofunctional therapy is an incredible tool for habit elimination, helping individuals break patterns that can negatively impact their oral and overall health. It targets habits like thumb sucking, nail-biting, tongue thrusting, and mouth breathing, which can lead to issues such as misaligned teeth, speech problems, and poor facial development. By retraining the muscles of the face, mouth, and throat, this therapy empowers patients to replace harmful habits with healthier ones, ultimately improving oral posture and function. Maintenance sessions are essential for ensuring lasting results, as they help reinforce the progress made and prevent the return of unwanted habits. These follow-ups allow therapists to fine-tune techniques and support patients in maintaining proper muscle patterns, such as tongue posture and nasal breathing.
